My new Dewalt DXH75KT torpedo heater. Burning #2 Diesel fuel and mixing 16oz. of 91% Isopropyl Alcohol in 5 gallons of fuel to help it burn cleaner and to cut down on odor from the fuel. I open the garage door about 6 inches to 1 foot for fresh air and open the entrance into the garage attic to allow it to vent through the attic and ridge vents on the roof. I got the pressure gauge so I know it's running the proper fuel pressure of 4.2 psi to keep it burning clean and keep the flame inside the combustion chamber. When it's cold & first fired up it runs a little high on pressure until it warms up a little. So far it hasn't set off my Carbon Monoxide Alarm and PPM readout still shows zero.

The first burn in was done outside to not only verify it worked properly but also to allow it to reach & maintain operating temp and adjust the fuel pressure for Diesel fuel. The pressure was set cold (immediately after ignition), then let it get hot and reset to proper pressure.

This heater gives you several different options of the fuel you can use. K1 kerosene, K2 kerosene, #1 Diesel, #2 Diesel, #1 Fuel Oil, #2 Fuel Oil, or, JP8 Jet Fuel. 

Many people use K1 kerosene in their heaters. I use #2 Diesel due to cost, also because it's readily available.

  • Looks like a handy little heater for when it gets cold and you need to work in the garage. Wonder if it would burn hotter with jet fuel? Bet that costs an arm and a leg (jet fuel)

    • I've heard that JP8 has a strong odor to it. I haven't tried it so don't know how true that is though. Could have been that the person who tries it just needed to adjust the fuel pressure properly. I know even with diesel if the pressure isn't set right it will put out an odor.

      • When I was in the Marines many years ago and was the gunner on a M60A1 Tank, the diesel heater was just below my feet and when it was opout of adjustment (most of the time) if would damn near kill me due to the flumes and CO2. hated that thing.

        • If the fuel pressure is adjusted properly so it burns clean, there shouldn't be a lot of problems using Diesel instead of K1 kerosene providing you have proper ventilation.

        • I like this. It would heat my garage at 900 sq ft. I use a propane heater now. That works ok but takes about 30 min's.

          • I can have the garage warm enough for short sleeves in around 15 to 20 minutes. If you use diesel you'll need to be sure to adjust the fuel pressure after it warms up so there's no odor.
